A fascinating tour of the Scottish Highlands and Islands includes history and local gems. We cover some of the country's best features from coast to country and highlands to islands. This tour also supports local communities.

Day 1 – Serene Countryside, Castles and Coastal Gems

Our morning departure from Edinburgh, Glasgow or anywhere in south central Scotland, takes us over the Firth of Forth to the lush rolling countryside and coastal region of Fife. Our first stop of the day is the 12th century Aberdour Castle. We then continue along the coast to the charming and historic Fife fishing village of Lower Largo, we will then visit St Monans, Pittenweem (for lunch) and the village of Crail. These villages are full of character and offer a unique insight into Scottish coastal life through the centuries. Our day ends in historic St Andrews.

Day 2 – Pictish Stones, Angus Country and Arbroath Abbey

We travel over the Firth of Tay to Scotland’s birth pace – Angus! First, we enjoy a breath of fresh North Sea air at stunning Lunan Bay. Here you can walk to the old Red Castle and have a coffee at the lovely Lunan Bay Diner. Next, we will travel in land to visit the impressive Aberlemno Pictish Stones, where the cross slab in Aberlemno Kirkyard is one of the finest dark age sculptures in Europe! We will then head into Forfar for a taste of the local delicacy - the Fofar Bridie at MacLarens the Bakers dating to 1893! After lunch you can enjoy a wander around the peaceful and historic Pitmuies Gardens before finishing the day with a visit to Arbroath Abbey, a true historic gem dating to 1178.

Overnight St Andrews. Dinner or local Fish & Chips.  

Day 3 – Cairngorms National Park & Speyside

Departing St Andrews, we travel north to the Cairngorm National park. We will stop off at some of our favourite viewpoints for photographs. Travelling on through the beautiful and mountainous Glenshee Road we arrive in the village of Braemar. After a wander in this pretty town you can have lunch in the award-winning Fife Arms Hotel. Our next stop is the lonely Corgarff Castle which stands at the head of Strathdon in beautiful Highland countryside. We then travel through glorious scenery to the River Spey and picturesque Craigallachie Bridge.

Day 4 – Cathedral, Mills and Whisky

A morning visit to The Lantern of the North – 13th Century Elgin Cathedral and then Johnstones of Elgin Woolen Mill where you can enjoy a mill tour. After lunch you will embark on a special tasting tour of The Balvenie Distillery.

Day 5 – West to the Highland and Islands

Today we travel from east to west and watch the landscape change to a wild rugged beauty of mountain and loch. We will travel into the Argyll region visiting Glencoe, one of the most stunning glens in all of Scotland and travel to Port Appin on Loch Linnhe. We will visit and look at the local history of this area including the unsolved Appin Murder of 1752. This event is tied to Jacobite Scotland and inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write Kidnapped.

Day 6 – Gaelic heritage and an Island Castle

Visit the Isle of Lismore for your own private Land Rover tour with a local island expert to look at the natural beauty and Gaelic heritage of this small island. In the afternoon a private visit to Castle Stalker followed by a scenic drive to Loch Creran for scenic West Highland beauty!

Overnight Port Appin area. Dinner at The Old Inn.

Day 7 – Oban and The Isle of Mull

Travel to Oban to enjoy this beautiful harbour town. After lunch in one of the excellent seafood restaurants board the ferry to the Isle of Mull, where we will stay for two nights in the pretty harbour town of Tobermory.

Day 8 – Exploring the Isle of Mull

We will visit the Isle of Mull Cheese dairy (a favourite of ours), we also introduce you to the tasty products of The Island Bakery! We will visit the beautiful expanse of Calgary Bay then continue across North West Mull to Loch Tuath which has amazing views over open sea, island, and mountain. Sea Eagles nest in this area and we may catch a glimpse. The focus of today is, off the beaten track, Island beauty.

Day 9 – Ferry back to the mainland

Travel via the Georgian town of Inverary and beautiful Loch Lomond to your departure or drop off point.
